Each year Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County (SPSF/BC) hosts Spring Awards for our incoming new students and returning students of the program. This program provides workshops to students covering a variety of topics from Time Management to Resume Writing.

This year our Spring Awards was held on Saturday, January 10th at the Shewmaker Center on the NWACC campus. Cameron Smith & Associates held a “Street Smarts” workshop covering resume writing, interview tips, social media standards and more. SPSF/BC Board Member, Barb Smith, and SPSF/BC Counselor, Nancy Weidman, held dual workshops covering financial aid and balancing work life with home life. The final group of workshops was hosted by the SPSF/BC Alumni Council and covered everything from Time Management to Financial Planning and even went over professional vs. personal wardrobe choices. These workshops are set up to help the SPSF/BC recipients be more successful in school and in life after they leave our program.

A new addition to our 2015 Spring Awards was bringing in a Keynote Speaker for our students to hear from. Don Soderquist is the business leader for whom The Soderquist Center is named and officially serves as the Founding Executive, providing direction and inspiration to their team. Don spent over 20 years with Walmart, and after Sam Walton died, Don became known as “The Keeper of the Culture.” Don led the company as Chief Operating Officer during a period marked by exponential growth. Under his watch, Walmart grew from being the largest retailer in the world with sales of $43.9 billion the year of Sam’s death, to becoming the largest company in the world with sales over $200 billion. Walmart’s success is grounded in the highly ethical, performance-focused, servant leadership philosophies that Sam and Don instilled in the hearts of every associate. Don’s passion now is to teach those same principles to companies and organizations around the world. He provided an inspirational message to the SPSF/BC recipients and we are very grateful for his support and the generosity him and his wife Jo have shown our organization.
