Neil H. Leavens (1925-2007)
Neil Leavens was born in Imlay City, MI. His mother was a teacher and Neil became a teacher after graduating from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. He went to college under the GI Bill after serving in the US Army, 2nd Infantry Division in Europe during WWII. He became a principal, served as the Director of Elementary Education and Director of Instructional Services in the Royal Oak Michigan Public School System. He retired after 36 years in education and moved to Bella Vista with his wife Burnis in 1988. He was active in the Bella Vista Presbyterian Church as an Elder, Clerk of Session and he helped with various computer activities and was the webmaster of the church web site. He was involved in the community including past president of the Bella Vista Crime Watch, former editor of the VFW Post 9063 Newsletter, former editor of the Crime Watch Newsletter, co-founder of the Bella Vista Model Railroad Club, and he was a volunteer at Bates Memorial Hospital. He lost his battle with cancer on March 18, 2007. He always had an interest and involvement in education so SPSFBC was a fitting tribute to Neil. He wanted to help students further their education. Neil was a devoted husband to Burnis for 56 years and the father of four children, Gayle, Gary, Glen and Gina.
