Neil O. Spain (1925-2006) & Clara J. Spain (1930-2004)
Both native Arkansans, Neil and Clara made their home in Rogers, AR. Neil retired from the United States Air Force and Clara from Southern California Gas Company. After living many years in California, they came home to retire in 1987. Retirement, however, was not in their vocabulary. Both Neil and Clara devoted their time to causes and issues they felt impacted their lives and the lives of others in a positive way. They loved the arts and both volunteered at the Walton Arts Center. Neil taught driving safety classes to seniors through 55 Alive. Clara was an IRS volunteer, preparing taxes for those who needed assistance. Through their love, generosity, recognition of potential and belief in rewarding hard work they made it possible for several young adults to realize their dream of attending college and pursuing graduate and even medical degrees. The Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences are just a few of the many organizations to benefit from their generosity. Neil and Clara believed in hard work, honesty, integrity, and loyalty. They gave generously of their time, talents and possessions, without fanfare or notoriety. Neither Neil’s animated tales nor Clara’s perfect manners and china-set table will be erased from our memories. Their family, friends and community will miss their tenacity, wit, boundless energy and kindness.
